Grass-Fed Lamb

Edges Wild Farm

Our sheep philosophy

Since the fall of 2021 when the first sheep came to live with us, we were hooked! Our flock of sheep are hair sheep - mixed breeds of katahdin, dorpor and painted desert. We look to improve our flock focusing on complete shedding, good hoofs, parasite resistance and twin birthing.

Lambs are born to beloved ewes in the spring right in time for the new spring pasture growth. We rotationally graze all the sheep, changing their access to pasture every one or two weeks depending on the time of year and the grass and forbes available to eat. Our goal is to keep the sheep on pasture for as long as possible during the year with an eye on pasture and lamb health. We usually end up feeding hay for one or two months in the winter when stockpiled grass is gone and new pasture hasn't started growing yet in the spring.

We do not feed grain on a regular basis, but we do give snacks of heirloom GMO-free red corn when changing pastures. As a result, the sheep will follow me anywhere! We separate the boy lambs away from the girls in the summer so we don't get surprise babies. We do not castrate, we do not dock tails and we let the girls naturally wean.

We take our lambs to Golden City Meats for butchering - a USDA inspected facility. Lamb are sheep under 1 year of age, mutton are sheep over 1 year of age.
